Where can I rent or buy a cello?
When you enroll in lessons I will send you a detailed PDF about this. For renting a cello, several of my favorite shops include Strings and Other Things, Potter Violins, and Johnson Strings.
Where should I buy new strings, rosin, et cetera?
Strings & Other Things is an excellent resource for any and all instrument accessories should you want to shop in person. If you prefer online shopping, sharmusic.com or amazon.com are both excellent websites.
What will I need for beginning cello lessons?
When you enroll in lessons, I will give you a detailed PDF of necessary materials. You can expect to purchase the appropriate level of the Suzuki method books, a scale book, a high quality rosin, a metronome, and a tuner. You'll also want to make sure that you have a chair that is at the correct height and a music stand at home.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching is strongly influenced by the Suzuki method and the teaching methods of Mimi Zweig and Susan Moses. I incorporate Dalcroze Eurhythmics and general music theory and ear training into each lesson. I believe that learning to play an instrument should be fun and enjoyable, while simultaneously stretching a child’s musical imagination and growing their cello technique. At the heart of my teaching is the study of technique, for as one’s technique improves, the musical rewards always increase.
How much do you charge?
My rate is $80 for an hour lesson, $70 for a 45 minute lesson, and $60 for a half hour lesson. Very occasionally I will travel to the student's apartment for an additional $30 travel fee; however, most of my teaching is done at my studio located in midtown Manhattan.
Do you offer video lessons remotely?
Yes! I find that lessons can be taught very successfully via video lesson using FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or Google Meet, and frequently teach via video.
